All I Want For Christmas

All I want for Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa (does anybody still celebrate that?)/Festivus or whatever it is you celebrate, is for the Chiefs to win out and win the AFC West and the Royals to actually make a decent trade for once.  I'll start with the Chiefs because that will take less time to type since I won't have the urge to rant and rave for three pages.  The Chiefs are in a position to do something they haven't done since 2006 (make the playoffs), and 2003 (win the division).  The nice thing about the 2010 Chiefs is that unlike the 2003 team, this one actually plays some defense.  Now don't get your hopes up sports fans, this is not a Super Bowl caliber team, so you can throw those dreams out along with your cazy aunt's fruit cake.  However, if the Chiefs make the playoffs, they could be a dangerous team for a team like the Jets or Ravens to face.

I know a lot of people want to say that it's the soft schedule that has helped the Chiefsthis season, and you'd be right.  The Chiefs have been terrible since losing in the 2006 playoffs so their schedule this season has been pretty soft, but you know what?  The Chiefs are 4-0 against the NFC West while the Chargers lost to both the Rams and the Seahawks.  I know the Chargers are a better team right now than the Chiefs and they should be.  They have playoff experience, a Pro Bowl quarterback, and a solid defense, but the Chiefs took care of business against teams they were supposed to beat.  And if it wasn't for Bowe's drops against Indy and Oakland, or the defensive collapse in Houston, this team could be 12-2 right now.  I don't want to hear it about the schedule.  This isn't the NCAA where teams get to pick their non-conference games, the Chiefs have no control over who they are scheduled to play.  I'm tired of so-called "Chiefs fans" jumping on and off the bandwagon.  You may not like Mel Gibson, but at least he's consistent, unlike you people.

I love how fans get amnesia every season at some point.  Even the most optimistic fan couldn't see the Chiefs doing better than 9-7 at the beginning of the season, and now those same fans are the ones criticising every move and saying this is a disappointing season if they don't make the playoffs.  No it's not, disappointing would be 5-11.  Even if the Chiefs lose one of the next two games and miss the playoffs, it's still a very productive year.  Why?  Because we've learned that this team has a lot of young talent, good coaching really does make a difference, and for the first time in a long time the Chiefs can draft players because they have a few spots to fill, not an entire roster to overhaul.

Of course making the playoffs would be nice but I'm not going to be terribly upset if they don't make it.  I've changed my mind, instead of the Chiefs winning the West, I want Chiefs fans to gain some perspective.  Listen, I know what it's like to grow up in Kansas City.  I've been a Kansas City sports fan my whole life and unlike a lot of you, I've never seen the glory days of the teams.  I know how hungry this city is for a winner but trust me, it's coming soon.  The Chiefs have a great core of young players like Charles, Johnson, Hali, Berry, and Bowe.  Cassel has started to come around as a quarterback (Brody Croyle fans please go cry in a corner now), and the leadership of this organization is solid.  So when you're kicking back on Sunday, enjoying the spoils of whatever it is you celebrate, remember one thing, at least we're not in Detriot.

Happy Holidays everyone.
